When it comes to designing or renovating your bathroom, one of the key decisions you’ll face is how to finish your walls. Two of the most popular options are traditional ceramic or porcelain tiles and wetwall panels (also known as shower panels or wall panels). But which is better for your space, budget, and lifestyle?

In this post, we’ll break down the pros and cons of each to help you make an informed choice.

What Are Wetwall Panels?

Wetwall panels are large waterproof wall boards typically made from PVC, acrylic, laminate, or composite materials. They are designed to be installed over existing walls or tiles, creating a seamless, watertight surface with minimal joints.

Appearance & Style

Tiles

Tiles offer a wide variety of styles, from traditional subway tiles to intricate mosaics and natural stone finishes. You can mix colours, textures, and patterns to create a truly bespoke look.

Pros:

  • Huge range of colours, shapes, and finishes

  • Timeless aesthetic appeal

  • Suitable for both modern and classic interiors

Cons:

  • Grout lines can become discoloured over time

  • Installation can be time-consuming

Wetwall Panels

Wetwall panels provide a sleek, modern appearance with fewer joins, giving bathrooms a clean and contemporary feel. Many come in high-gloss, marble, stone or tile-effect finishes.

Pros:

  • Seamless and modern look

  • Tile-effect options available for a traditional look

  • Easy to match across large spaces

Cons:

  • Limited in design flexibility compared to tiles

  • Some options may look less ‘authentic’ up close

Installation

Tiles

Tiling requires careful preparation and is often best handled by a professional. It can be time-intensive due to the need for adhesive setting and grouting.

Pros:

  • Long-lasting if installed well

  • Ideal for curved or irregular surfaces

Cons:

  • Labour-intensive

  • More expensive to install

Wetwall panels are quicker and easier to install, often fitting directly over existing tiles or plasterboard. DIY-friendly for those with moderate skills.

Pros:

  • Faster installation – often in a day

  • No grout required

  • Less mess and disruption

Cons:

  • Can be tricky to

  • cut for intricate areas (e.g., around windows or pipes)

  • Professional fitting may still be advisable for best results

Maintenance & Cleaning

Tiles

Grout can be prone to mould and staining, especially in damp conditions. Regular scrubbing or sealing may be required.

Panels are very low maintenance – just a wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually enough. No grout means fewer places for mould to form.

Waterproofing & Durability

Both options are suitable for wet areas, but their waterproofing methods differ.

  • Tiles rely on a combination of waterproof adhesive, grout, and sealing membranes behind the walls.

  • Wetwall panels are inherently waterproof and provide a solid barrier when correctly sealed at the joints.

In terms of longevity, tiles may last longer if well maintained, while some cheaper wetwall panels may be prone to warping or damage if not properly installed.

Both tiles and wetwall panels have their strengths. If you’re aiming for a classic, luxury finish, tiles remain a solid choice. But if you're looking for speed, simplicity and low maintenance, wetwall panels might be the smarter option – especially for rental properties, family bathrooms or modern updates.
